Abstract
This article argues that Luhmanns social systems theory has the potential to become an exceptionally useful theoretical resource for the study of globalization. First, Luhmanns central concepts and frameworks of analysis provide a rigorous social theoretical basis that the transgressive, integrative, and decentered features of contemporary globalization can be effectively redescribed. Second, Luhmann is also useful because he powerfully challenges, and not simply reinforces, theories of globalization by raising the question of the structure of modern society that is often sidelined or only inadequately addressed. By tenaciously asking the question on the form of modern world society and its complex dynamics, Luhmann invites us to think more seriously about the question of modern society itself, rather than remain fixated on its spectacular characteristics that are often stressed in globalization research.
