천문학자 안톤 판네쿡의 노동으로서의 과학관

Abstract

본 논문에서는 네덜란드의 천문학자 안톤 판네쿡의 과학관의 중요한 부분이 과학을 하나의 노동으로, 과학적 지식을 그 노동의 산물로 간주한다는 점임을 『철학자로서의 레닌』을 비롯한 판네쿡의 저술을 중심으로 분석한다. 판네쿡은 요제프 디츠겐의 인식론 철학을 계승하여 연속적이고 변화무쌍한 현상들의 스펙트럼으로 이루어진 세계에 인간의 정신이 의식적으로 개입하여 추상화된 개념들을 생산해내고 그 개념들을 체계화하여 개념들 사이의 관계를 밝히는 정신노동을 과학적 실천의 본질이라고 규정했다. 판네쿡이 이와 같은 과학관을 수용하고 또한 마르크스주의자로서 정체화했을 당시, 그는 네덜란드 천문학계의 소장파로서 고전적 위치천문학과 현대적 천체물리학 사이의 패러다임 경쟁에서 후자를 지지하는 입장에 있었으며, 디츠겐의 과학철학은 이러한 목적에 더 잘 부합하는 내용을 가지고 있었다. 1900년대에 정립된 과학관을 바탕으로 판네쿡은 과학적 사회주의의 성격을 둘러싼 논쟁들에서의 입장을 결정했고, 자연과학자로서 마르크스주의 혁명을 지향할 수 있는 내적 논리를 얻었다. 이 모든 측면에 있어서 판네쿡에게 가장 중요하게 작용했던 관념은 과학지식을 인간이 의식적으로 노동하여 만들어내는 인위적인 것으로 규정함으로써 과학지식의 권위를 상대화하고 인간을 주체로 만드는 것이었다.

This paper, analyzes that an important part of the Dutch astronomer Anton Pannekoek's view of science was that regarding science as a labour, and scientific knowledge as a product of that labour, by focusing on Pannekoek's writings, including Lenin as Philosopher. Inheriting Josef Dietzgen's epistemology, Pannekoek identified mental labour as the essence of scientific practice: the conscious intervention of the human mind into a world composed of a continuous and changing gradation of phenomena, producing abstract concepts, organizing those concepts, and revealing the relationships between them. At the time Pannekoek adopted this view of science and also identified as a Marxist, he was a member of a emerging faction in Dutch astronomical community that supported the paradigm challenge of modern astrophysics against classical Astrometry, and Dietzgen's philosophy was better suited to this purpose. The view of science established in the 1900s determined Pannekoek's position in the debates over the nature of scientific socialism, and made him possible to position himself as a natural scientist participating Marxist revolution. In all these aspects, the most important idea for Pannekoek was to relativize the authority of scientific knowledge and to make humans subjects, by defining scientific knowledge as an artificial product of conscious mental labour.
