허구적 설정 이미지를 통한 현실 비판적 표현 연구

Abstract

본 논문에서는 허구적 설정의 이미지를 통해 현실 비판적 인식을 표현하는 나의 작품을 분석한다. 나의 작품은 증명사진과 같은 인물 사진이나 소셜 미디어에 공유되는 이미지가 손쉽게 편집되고 왜곡되어 허구성을 띠고 있음을 발견하는 것으로 시작한다. 나의 작업은 이러한 허구적 특성을 지닌 이미지가 양산되는 이유를 사회, 경제, 문화적 배경 등의 외부요인과 함께 다각도로 분석한 후, 이에 관한 나의 비판적 관점을 오브제와 이미지를 통해 시각화하여 표현하는 일련의 과정이다. 본 논문에 수록된 나의 작업은 크게 전·후반기로 나뉘며, 작업이 진행되는 과정에 따라 그 관심사와 소재가 세부적으로 변화한다. 전반기 작업에서는 인물 사진이 편집되고 왜곡되는 원인으로 한국 사회의 외모지상주의와 자기계발문화를 제시한다. 신분 증명의 용도로 사용되는 증명사진, 취업사진 등이 보정되는 이유를 추적하며, 인간의 신체와 몸을 계발, 개선의 대상으로 바라보는 외모지상주의와 자기계발문화의 특성을 논의한다. 이는 오늘날 소셜 미디어에 공유되는 디지털 이미지에 반영되어 나타난다. 나의 전반기 작업에서는 이러한 양상을 비판적 시각으로 표현한다. 후반기 작업은 디지털 플랫폼, 소셜 미디어 문화에서 나타나는 허구적 인간상에 초점을 맞춘다. 최근 소셜 미디어를 중심으로 인기를 얻고 있는 부캐, 가상 인간 인플루언서가 가진 허구적 특성에 주목한다. 이 두 종류의 인물상은 그들의 페르소나와 외형 등이 창작자의 의도에 맞게 설정되어 탄생하고, 이들의 일상은 디지털 미디어에 공유되는 이미지를 통해 허구적으로 구축된다. 이러한 허구적 요소는 나의 작품에 직접적으로 반영된다. 후반기 작품에서는 페르소나와 이미지를 세부적으로 연출하여 부캐와 가상인간 인플루언서를 생성한다. 완벽한 신체를 향한 인간의 욕망은 디지털 공간에서 이미지 기술과 결합하여 실제 인간의 신체적 한계를 뛰어넘은 허구적 인물 이미지로 표출된다. 현재의 사회문제가 지속되어 더욱 심화된 미래 시점을 상상하는 것은 나의 주된 작품 구상 방법론이다. 이 시점에 등장할 상품을 상상하여 이를 디지털 이미지와 모형의 형식을 통해 시각화하고, 미래 시점을 배경으로 하는 특정 상황의 서사를 텍스트 기반의 영상 매체로 전달한다. 이러한 시점의 이동을 통한 구상 방식을 통해 현재의 문제를 확대하여 미래의 시점에서 재인식하게 한다. 본 연구는 2017년부터 2022년까지 진행한 나의 작업의 기저에 있는 인간의 신체가 개발의 대상이 된 사회적 풍토에 관한 문제의식과 소셜 미디어 공간에서 나타나는 피상적 소통방식에 대한 비판의식에 관한 검토와 분석이 이루어졌다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

This thesis analyses my work, which reflects my critical perspective on society through images with fictive settings. I began my work by identifying that images shared on social media and digital portrait images are fundamentally fictive because they are easily edited and retouched. My art practice is a series of processes that involves analysing this phenomenon within its social, economic, and cultural context and expressing my critical perspective through object making and image production.

The subject matter that I focus on in my artistic practice has shifted over time. In my earlier work, I investigated the reasons why digital portraits, such as identification photographs in Korea, are retouched even though they are intended for official use as proof of ones identity. In this study, I discuss this phenomenon by examining lookism and self-help culture in Korean society. Self-help culture and lookism see the human body and mind as objects to develop and improve, as reflected by retouched digital images on social media. My early art practice embodies a critical consciousness towards these matters.

My later work focuses on fictive human figures that appear on digital platforms and in social media-based culture. I pay attention to the fictitious characteristics of Buke(multi-persona) and virtual human influencers that have recently gained popularity on social media. Their personas and appearances are made-up for their creators intentions and their social activities are fictitiously constructed through images shared on social media. These fictional elements of these two characters are directly reflected in my work. I have created my own Buke(multi-persona) as well as develop personas for virtual influencers in my work. The human desire for the perfect body takes shape into images of fictive human figures in digital space whilst incorporating the development of image processing technology. Through using fictive human figures, I aim to reflect my critical perspective on the human desire for a perfect body and the superficiality of social media.

The main methodology of my artistic practice involves imagining and postulating possible scenarios in the event that current issues have deteriorated in the future. This strategy of posing What-if questions to develop narratives is similar to that of science fiction and film. In my later work, the methodology I employ is to first imagine a possible scenario and postulate a prototype of a product as a response to that scenario. These prototypes are visualized through the creation of models, digital images, or videos with accompanying narratives. Through the shift of temporal and spatial settings, my work considers how the viewer might perceive the future within these narratives. This approach allows for the expansion and re-contextualisation of the current issues we face today.

This study is significant in that it examines and analsyses my critical perspective on the current social condition, whereby the human body has become an object to be enhanced and developed in the age of digital superficiality on social media. This practice-based research was conducted as part of my work from 2017 to 2022.
