화학 교육에서 실험 수업의 역할:19세기 리비히의 관점에 비추어

Abstract

실험 수업은 현대 과학교육에서 중요한 부분을 차지해 왔다. 대학 실험실에서 화학 실험 수업은 학생에게 구체적인 감각과 합리적인 사고를 경험하게 하는 역할을 하고 학생의 실험 역량 증진을 위해 필수적인 것으로 간주되고 있다. 고등교육에서 실험 수업을 설계하는 것은 어려운 과제로 여겨지는데, 이때 실험 수업의 목적을 정하는 것이 필수적인 단계이다. 그러나 실험 수업의 목적은 그 맥락과 관점에 따라 다양하게 주장되고 있어 하나의 정답을 주장하는 것은 어려워 보인다. 한편, 19세기의 독일의 저명한 과학자인 리비히(Justus von Liebig, 1803-1873)는 유기화학, 의학, 약학, 생리학, 농업 등 다양한 분야에서 지적 진보를 이룬 과학자이자 독일 대학의 화학 실험실을 체계화하여 화학 교육에 한 획을 그은 인물로 평가받는다. 리비히는 독일에서 화학의 위상을 높이는 과정에서 화학 교육과 실험의 필요성 및 중요성을 강조했다. 이러한 측면에서, 리비히의 관점에 비추어 실험 수업의 목적을 살펴보는 것은 이에 대한 하나의 답을 제공해줄 수 있을 것으로 보았다. 본 연구에서는 대학 실험실에서 화학 실험 수업의 목적에 대한 리비히의 생각과 이것이 드러난 그의 실천을 살펴보고자 한다. 구체적으로, 리비히의 생각에 영향을 준 독일과 프랑스에서의 연구 경험, 그리고 이를 바탕으로 그가 지적한 독일에서 화학의 상태에 관해 정리한 후, 그의 관점에서 실험 수업의 목적을 살펴보았다. 그리고나서 이러한 리비히의 생각이 화학 교육의 실천에 어떻게 반영되었는지 알아보기 위해 실험 도구와 교수법을 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 리비히의 관점에 비추어 본 실험 수업의 목적은 (1) 현상의 언어를 습득하고 실천을 통해 이를 감각하기, (2) 문제를 해결하고 목적을 달성하는 방법 습득하기, (3) 실험의 기초와 응용 학습하기, (4) 실험에 대해 서로 논의하고 소통하기였다. 이 연구 결과는 실험 수업이 목적에 맞는 체계적인 교육과정을 통해 진행되어야 하고 실험 수업에서의 도구는 사용 방법이 간단하고 실험은 연속성을 가짐으로써 학생이 도구와 실험에 익숙해질 수 있도록 해야 하며 실험 수업에서 교사와 학생 또는 학생 사이의 논의와 소통이 필수적임을 시사한다.

Laboratory instruction has been an important part of modern science education, and in chemistry at the university level it serves to expose students to concrete sensations and rational thinking, and is considered essential for the development of students' experimental capabilities. Designing laboratory instruction in higher education is considered a challenging task, and defining the purpose of laboratory instruction is an essential step. However, it is argued that the purpose of laboratory instruction varies according to the context and perspective, and it seems difficult to argue for a single answer. Justus von Liebig (1803-1873), a famous 19th century German scientist, is regarded not only as a scientist who made intellectual advances in various fields such as organic chemistry, medicine, pharmacy, physiology, and agriculture, but also as a person who made his mark on chemistry education by systematizing German university laboratories. In the process of raising the status of chemistry in Germany, Liebig emphasized the necessity and importance of chemistry education and experiments. In this respect, examining the purpose of laboratory instruction from Liebig's perspective can provide an answer to the role of laboratory instruction. In this study, we examine Liebig's thoughts on the role of the laboratory instruction and his practices in which these appeared. Specifically, the role of laboratory instruction from his perspective was investigated after analyzing his research experiences in Germany and France that influenced his thoughts, as well as the state of German chemistry as he described it. We then looked closely at the experimental instruments and pedagogy to see how these ideas were reflected in the practice of chemistry education. The results of this study showed that, in the light of Liebig's perspective, the roles of laboratory instruction were (1) to acquire the language of phenomena and to feel them through practice, (2) to learn how to solve problems and achieve goals, (3) to learn basic and applied aspects of experiments, and (4) to discuss and communicate with each other about experiments. The results of this study suggest that in laboratory instruction, instruments should be easy to use, experiments should have continuity so that students can become familiar with instruments and experiments, and discussion and communication between teachers and students, or among students, are essential in laboratory instruction.
