여성 팬은 어떻게 여성 아이돌을 해독하는가?

Abstract

The 4th generation of K-pop girl groups is gaining huge popularity in Korea. In contrast to the past, their popularity is now based on broad support from Korean women. How should we interpret this recent phenomenon of K-pop girl groups gaining strong support from women? Female fandom of K-pop girl groups is largely marginalized, receiving little attention from academia. Therefore, this study aims to broaden the scope of fandom research to include the often-overlooked female fandom and their fan activities. This study also seeks to analyze the affect behind Korean womens recent adoption of girl groups and examine how female fans interpret the image and music of the 4th generation of K-pop girl groups. To achieve this, interviews were conducted with 20 women above the age of 18 who identify themselves as fans of the 4th generation of K-pop girl groups. According to the interviews, female fans argued that disappointment with male idols starting with the Burning Sun Scandal and the Feminism Reboot, led them to become fans of girl groups. However, contrary to their argument, a desire to continue engaging in idol fandom activities that do not contradict feminist values also influenced in this fandom shift. Furthermore, it was observed that feelings of admiration also played a role in womens participation in female idol fandom. There are also points of criticism in female fandom and fans interpretation of idols. For instance, female fans tend to be less critical of the feminist strategies manufactured by entertainment agencies. Additionally, female fans tend to accept images related to female idols bodies and appearances presented by the companies unquestioningly. However, when it comes to images associated with wealth, female fans exhibited a more critical perspective, alternating between negotiated and oppositional reading. Nevertheless, despite the heightened sensitivity to feminism among female fans, the ways they interpret the cultural diversity of idol groups show little change. Consequently, different interpretations have led female fans to experience contradictions and conflicts with other female fans during their fan activities. This study is meaningful in that it analyzed the phenomenon of increasing female fans of girl groups and extended the discourse on female fandom. However, this research has limitations since it only focused on heterosexual female fans, failing to grasp the multi-dimensional aspects of female fandom.

4세대 여성 아이돌 그룹이 두각을 나타내며 여성 아이돌 전성시대를 이끌어가고 있다. 이들은 과거와 다르게 여성 팬들의 폭 넓은 지지를 바탕으로 큰 인기를 얻고 있다. 이러한 현상은 남성 아이돌은 팬덤형 그리고 여성 아이돌은 대중성이라는 대중문화 산업에 자리잡고 있던 해묵은 공식에 균열을 일으키는 것이기도 하다. 이처럼 최근 몇 년 사이 여성 아이돌 그룹이 같은 여성으로부터 강력한 지지를 얻는 현상은 어떻게 해석해야 하는 것일까? 언론에서는 2010 년대 이후 본격적으로 여성 연예인의 여성 팬덤에 주목하며, 관련된 담론을 생성해 왔지만 아직까지 학계에서 여성 아이돌의 여성 팬덤은 주변화됐으며, 크게 주목받지 못하고 있다. 이에 따라 본 연구는 여성 아이돌 그룹의 팬덤에 대한 논의가 부족하다는 문제의식에서 출발했으며, 팬덤 연구의 범위를 넓혀 그간 등한시되어온 여성 팬덤과 이들의 팬덤 활동 방식에 주목하고자 했다. 이 같은 문제의식을 바탕으로 본 연구는 최근 여성이 여성 아이돌의 팬이 되는데 작용한 정동을 파악하고자 했다. 또한 여성 팬덤의 달라진 성격과 행동 양식을 고찰하고, 페미니즘과 신자유주의와 관련된 이론적 논의를 적용해 여성 팬들의 팬 활동이 페미니즘 그리고 신자유주의적 가치와 어떤 가치를 맺는지 알아보고자 했다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 스스로를 4세대 여성 아이돌 그룹의 팬이라고 생각하는 만 18세 이상의 여성 20명을 대상으로 인터뷰를 진행했다. 연구 결과, 여성 팬들은 버닝썬 게이트를 필두로 연예계에서 벌어진 남성 아이돌의 사건 사고로 인해 남성 아이돌에게 실망하게 되고, 이들의 팬 활동에 대한 관심이 시들었다고 주장했다. 비슷한 시기 한국 사회에서 페미니즘 대중화가 이뤄지고, 여성 연예인의 인권 문제를 비롯한 여성 의제에 관심을 갖게 되면서 자연스럽게 여성 아이돌 그룹의 팬 활동에도 참여하게 됐다고 덧붙였다. 하지만 이 이면에는 페미니스트로서 페미니즘과 모순되지 않는 아이돌 팬덤 활동을 이어가고 싶은 욕망이 작용한 것으로 나타났다. 이외에도 좋아하는 여성 아이돌을 향해 동경의 감정을 느끼고, 이들을 따라 자기계발에 집중하는 모습을 통해 신자유주의적인 열망 역시 함께 작동하고 있다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 여성 팬덤의 성격과 팬들의 아이돌 해독 방식에는 비판의 지점도 존재한다. 가령 여성팬들은 기획사가 만들어낸 페미니즘과 주체성의 전략을 비판적으로 받아들이기 보다는 여기에 포섭되는 한계를 보인다. 또한 여성 팬들은 여성 아이돌의 몸과 외모의 텍스트 역시 저항적으로 해독하지 못하고, 기획사가 주조한 대로 받아들이는 모습을 보였다. 다만, 최근 기획사에서 적극적으로 이용하고 있는 부와 관련된 이미지에 대해서는 비판적인 시각으로 바라보는 등 타협적 해독과 저항적 해독을 오고 가는 모습을 보였다. 하지만 이 밖에도 여성 팬들을 중심으로 페미니즘에 대한 감수성이 높아졌음에도 불구하고, 아이돌 그룹의 문화적 다양성을 해독하는 방식에는 큰 변화가 없는 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 이러한 다른 해독 방식으로 인해 여성 팬들은 팬 활동 중 모순을 느끼기도 하고, 다른 팬들과 갈등을 빚는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 여성 아이돌 그룹의 여성 팬이 늘어나는 현상을 분석하고, 이를 의미화하는 과정에서 여성 팬에 대한 담론을 확장했다는 의의를 갖는다. 또한 여성 팬덤의 성격과 실천이 페미니즘 대중화 그리고 신자유주의적 이데올로기에 어떠한 영향을 받고 있는지 탐구했다는 데 의미가 있다. 다만, 본 연구는 연구 대상을 이성애자 여성으로만 한정한 탓에 여성 팬의 다층적인 정동을 파악하지 못했다는 한계를 갖는다.
