한국 청년 보수주의의 포퓰리즘적 양식

Abstract

본 논문은 서울대학교를 중심으로 활동하는 청년 보수 단체 A에 대한 참여관찰을 기반으로 근래의 한국 정치 속 청년 보수와 극우의 존재 양태를 바라보려 시도한다. 탄핵 사태 이후에 들어선 정부의 정책들에 반대하며 자유민주주의 수호를 기치로 내걸었던 보수 세력은 행동주의 기독교와 청년 보수라는 정체성을 바탕으로 한다는 점에서 기존의 보수가 가졌던 이미지들과는 결을 달리했다. 주로 독실한 개신교인 청년들로 구성된 A는 이 정체성들이 교차하는 지점에 놓여 있었으며, 그들이 점유하는 특이한 정치적 위치와 맥락을 살펴볼 수 있는 좋은 기회를 제공했다. 이들의 주장은 일반적으로 극우로 치부되면서 공론장에서 배제되었지만, 본 연구는 대중의 정치적 지지를 얻고자 하는 사회운동 전반에 적용될 수 있는 포퓰리즘의 개념을 활용해 그와 같은극우에 대한 정치적 관점을 탈피하고자 했다. 특히 사회운동들이 대중적 호소력과 지지를 얻게 하는 문화적 맥락과 배경에 주목하는 양식적 접근은 기존의 연구와 사회적 시선들이 가져온 극우에 대한 정치적 관점으로부터 상대적으로 자유로우며, 그들을 자유주의의 타자가 아닌 그 구성원으로 바라볼 수 있게 한다. 이러한 관점 아래에서 본 연구는 자유민주주의 수호를 외치며 대한민국을 종교적 관점 아래에서 새롭게 상상하려는 A의 시도와 포퓰리즘의 접점을 분석하고(II장), 그 과정에서 발생하는 위기의식이 어떻게청년이라는 기표와 연결되어 A에 의해 받아들여지고 있는지 파악했다(III장). 현재 사회에서 고립되고 박해받고 있다는 위기의식은 청년들로 하여금 진정성의 가치를 찾아 나서게 했으며, 나아가 그들의 정체성을 더욱 공고하게 만들었다. 이어서 A가 종교적 믿음에 근거해 진실을 바라보는 관점은 그들이 사회 속에서 보여주는 다양한 활동들을 뒷받침하는 근거가 되었다(IV장). 본 연구는 이 과정에서 A의 회원들이 공유하는 사회적 상상이 자유주의적 질서로부터 동떨어진 것이기보다, 오히려 그 질서와 분리할 수 없는 것임을 보여주려 했다. 권력으로부터 배제된 현재의 상태는 그들의 정체성을 형성하는 중요한 요인이 되며, 이성적이고 합리적인 주체의 상을 지켜내기 위해 진실을 말하고 사회를 계몽시키려는 시도는 그들을 향하는 자유주의의 작용과 거울상을 이루고 있다. 다시 말해, A의 극우적 상상은 자유주의 권력으로부터 동떨어져 존재할 수 없으며, 오히려 그 작용에 의해 발생하는 그림자 또는 증상으로 이해할 수 있을지 모른다. 결론적으로 본 연구는 극우를 보다 정확히 이해하고, 분석하기 위해서는 그들을 타자화하고 배제해 온 자유주의의 한계와 자장을 벗어난 새로운 시도들이 필요함을 제안한다.

This research aims to analyze so-called youth conservativemovements and far-rightwhich became salient during the post-impeachment period in Korea. Shoutingdefend liberal democracy as their slogan, their activities were a political phenomenon not only because they maintained an anachronistic Cold War perspective, but also because they portrayed youth as their essential character. A, ayouth conservative group active within Seoul National University, shows these characters based on Christian faith and conservatism. By trying to perceive their political activism as populism, the research aims to liberate them from conventional prejudices and exclusions, which portrays them as irrational and radicalfar-right. Instead, interpreting their activities as a part of certain populist style helps to understand them as agents embedded within social and cultural contexts which are also shared bynormal society as well. To do so, the paper tried to construe their agenda of defending liberal democracy as part of a broader project that imagines Korea as a miracle, an evidence of Gods Providence and choice. This is also why the members of A feel a sense of crisis within a contemporary society, since Christian characters and values are lost or threatened(Chapter II). This sense of crisis also acts as a motive behind As members searching for authenticity within a current society. While the image of youth has been interpreted in various and different ways throughout history, members maintain a somewhat classical version, which pictures it as a positive, authentic character leading social and political change(chapter III). While maintaining this image sometimes leads to social exclusion and mockery, As members transform this sense of persecution into a proof of authenticity, and builds their identity upon its injury. Their political endeavors to speak hidden and oppressed alternative truths are also connected to this sense of persecution. By doing so, they strive to enlighten a society already dominated and controlled by Marxist and leftist projects(Chapter IV). It is important to note that they are actually inextricable from the existence and functions of Liberal order. They are created and reinforced by liberal exclusions, and they try to recover an image of rational, liberal individual which also lies at the bottom of the basic premises of liberalism. This is why this research hopes to reinterpret far-right not as the liberal Other, but as its mirror image, shadow, or symptom. Further efforts free from liberal disciplines, are needed to better understand their existence and influences.
