힌데미트의 《무반주 첼로 소나타 Op. 25, No. 3》와 《첼로와 피아노를 위한 소나타(1948)》의 비교 분석 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 20세기의 대표적인 독일 작곡가 파울 힌데미트(Paul Hindemith, 1895-1963)의 첼로 소나타 중 두 곡, 《무반주 첼로 소나타 Op. 25, No. 3》와 《첼로와 피아노를 위한 소나타(1948)》를 힌데미트의 시기별 작곡 기법을 중점으로 한 비교 분석 연구이다. 필자는 2020년 서울대학교 음악대학원 석사과정 졸업 연주로 《무반주 첼로 소나타 Op. 25, No. 3》을 연주하였는데, 본 연구는 작곡 시기가 다른 힌데미트의 두 곡을 비교 분석하여 시기에 따른 작곡 기법의 특징 및 변화를 연구하여 두 곡에 대한 이해를 높이려 한다. 힌데미트는 후기 낭만주의부터 현대 음악까지 격변하는 20세기의 음악계에서 신고전주의(Neo-classicism)라는 큰 축을 담당한 음악 사조의 대표 작곡가이다. 그는 조성이나 화성의 확장을 통해 고전적 기법에서의 발전을 꾀하였으며, 구조적 측면에서도 과거의 형식을 사용함으로써 신고전주의적 특징을 표현해내었다. 특히 낭만주의 이전 시대의 음악 중 바로크 음악 양식을 주로 사용하여 그의 신고전주의는 신바로크주의라고 불리기도 하였다. 조성을 이용한 선율을 통해 현대적인 대위법의 체계를 재정비하고, 자신만의 화성어법을 체계화시켜 독자적이면서도 전통적인 조성 및 화성의 가치를 담아내었다. 《무반주 첼로 소나타 Op. 25, No. 3》은 그의 초기 작품으로 후기 낭만주의에서 신고전주의로 넘어가는 과도기에 작곡된 곡이다. 이 시기는 반낭만주의가 강하게 발현되던 때로 불협화음과 기계적 리듬을 특징적으로 사용하며, 아름다운 선율이나 복잡한 기능화성이 주를 이루었던 낭만주의 음악과 반하는 모습을 보인다. 《첼로와 피아노를 위한 소나타(1948)》는 완전한 신고전주의로 정착한 후기 작품으로 그만의 조성 및 화성 체계와 대위법 등이 풍부하게 사용되어, 신고전주의 양식의 특징을 느낄 수 있다. 이 두 곡은 힌데미트의 첼로 연주곡 중 그의 시기별 작품 경향을 잘 나타내는 곡임에도 선행 연구가 현저히 부족하다. 따라서 본 고에서는 각 곡의 심층적인 분석과 함께 둘 사이에 나타나는 작곡 기법의 차이점을 비교함으로써 힌데미트의 시기별 작품 특징을 이해하고, 그에 따른 두 곡을 요소별로 심층적으로 연구해 보고자 한다.

This thesis is a comparative analysis study focusing on the compositional techniques of Paul Hindemith (1895-1963), one of the prominent German composers of the 20th century, of the two following sonatas for cello: 《Solo Cello Sonata Op. 25, No. 3》 and 《Sonata for Cello and Piano (1948)》. The author has performed 《Solo Cello Sonata Op. 25, No. 3.》for a commencement recital for Master of Music at Seoul National University, Class of 2020. This research aims to enhance understanding of these two pieces by comparing and analyzing the compositional techniques and their changes, according to the respective periods in these Hindemith's works.

Hindemith played a significant role in the music world of the rapidly changing 20th century, spanning from late Romanticism to contemporary music. He is one of the most important composers in the musical movement known as Neoclassicism, which sought to revive classical principles through expansions in composition and harmony. He developed classical techniques and expressed Neoclassical characteristics by utilizing past forms in the structural aspect. Particularly, he predominantly employed Baroque music among the pre-Romantic repertoire, leading to the term "Neo-Baroque" for his Neoclassical style. Through the use of melody in composition, he restructured the system of modern counterpoint and systematized his unique harmonic language, encompassing both individuality and traditional values of composition and harmony.

《Solo Cello Sonata Op. 25, No. 3》 is an early work of Hindemith's transitional period, moving from late Romanticism to Neoclassicism. This period featured strong elements of anti-Romanticism, characterized by dissonances and mechanical rhythms, contrasting with the Romantic period that emphasized beautiful melodies and complex functional harmony. 《Sonata for Cello and Piano (1948)》 represents a later work where Hindemith fully established his Neoclassical style, incorporating his own compositional and harmonic system along with counterpoint techniques. It reflects the characteristics of Neoclassicism style. These two sonatas show the style of Hindemiths cello pieces in different period of his composition however, they have been under-researched. Therefore, this study endeavors to understand the characteristics of Hindemith's works according to the periods and delve deeply into the elements of both pieces through in-depth analysis and a comparison of the differences in compositional techniques between them.
