경계를 넘어서: 동아시아 시각에서 본 고구려 벽화

Abstract

본 논문은 고구려 벽화를 동아시아의 시각에서 살펴보고자 했다. 그동안 고구려 고분벽화를 고구려라는 고대 국가의 틀 안 에서 바라보았던 것은 아닌가라는 반성에서 출발하였다. 고구려라는 국가의 틀과 그 문화적 특질을 너무도 당연한 전제인 것처럼 생각해 왔지만, 혹 고대 국가를 근대 민족국가의 개념과 중첩시켜 이해했던 것은 아닌지 되돌아볼 필요가 있다고 생 각했기 때문이다. 적어도 문화의 수용과 교류라는 측면만큼은 국가라는 아이덴티티를 벗어나야 한다는 문제의식이다. 이러한 문제의식하에 나는 고구려 벽화를 국가 단위라는 기존의 도식에서 벗어나서 고구려 벽화를 이해하기 위해 두 가 지 문제를 검토하였다. 첫째는 고구려 벽화의 보편성이다. 이를 위해 동아시아 벽화의 화제(畵題)에 관통하는 보편적 속성 을 찾아보았다. 죽은 자가 묻히는 공간인 무덤 속 벽화의 화제가 추구하는 공통의 목적은 묘주의 사후 천상세계로의 승천 이었다. 고구려 벽화 역시 이러한 보편성 속에서 이해하여 보려는 것이다. 둘째는 고구려 벽화의 개별성이다. 고구려라는 지역 전체의 특징을 찾기 이전에 그림 그 자체의 내용과 기법에 주목해 보아야 한다. 벽화는 화공이 학습한 동아시아의 벽 화 전통과 자신이 속한 화공집단의 화풍, 그리고 화본(畵本)을 통한 새로운 유행의 수용 등이 기본이 되고, 여기에 묘주와 그 가족의 요청이 중첩되면서 만들어졌다. 그 때문에 고구려 내의 벽화는 개별성과 다양성을 띨 수밖에 없었다. 이러한 동 아시아 벽화라는 보편성과 벽화의 개별성이라는 두 가지 요소가 조합되는 지역적 경향성이 곧 고구려 벽화의 특수성이라 할 수 있을 것이다.

This paper aims to examine Goguryeo murals from an East Asian perspective. It begins by noting that the murals of Goguryeo tombs have, until now, generally been viewed within the framework of the Goguryeo Kingdom. Although the adoption of such a premise and its accompanying cultural framework may at first appear to be unproblematic, the way in which this approach has resulted in the overlapping of the concept of the ancient state with the concept of the modern nation state was pointed out. Thus, the need to break free from the shackles of an identity based on the nation state – at least when exploring issues of cultural adoption and exchange was proposed. From this standpoint, two issues were addressed in relation to Goguryeo murals. The first was the need for a critique of the notion of the universality of Goguryeo murals. For this purpose, universal attributes that penetrate all East Asian murals, were identified. In particular, it was noted that the common purpose of the messages presented by the murals of the tomb, a place where the dead were laid to rest, was the ascension from the tomb to the heavenly world in the afterlife. It was argued that Goguryeo murals must also be understood by taking into consideration this universal nature. The second issue was the individuality of the Goguryeo murals. Before looking for characteristics distinctive to Goguryeo, attention should be paid to the contents and techniques of the paintings themselves. Mural paintings were influenced by the tradition of East Asian mural paintings, the painting style of the painters group, and the acceptance of new pictorial trends, in addition to the requests of the deceased and his or her family. For this reason, murals within Goguryeo were bound to be individualistic and diverse. The combination of these two elements – of the universal nature of the East Asian mural tradition and the individual nature of the murals – can be put forth as the distinctive characteristic element of Goguryeo murals.
