버내큘러와 제도의 관계에 대한 미국에서의 연구

Abstract

원래 땅에 붙어있는 말이라는 의미를 지니던 버내큘러(vernacular)라는 개념은 미국에서 언어학 분야를 비롯하여 문화 인류학, 건축학, 문학비평, 수사학, 민속종교학, 민속학 등 다양한 분야의 연구에서 많이 언급되어 왔다. 1960년대부터는 문화인류학 분야에서 제도와 대비되는 개념으로 사용되었고 건축학에서도 이와 비슷하게 건축학계나 고급 디자인과 차별되는 요소를 가리키기 위해서 사용되었다. 특히 최근 들어 건축학에서는 버내큘러란 용어가 아직도 유용한 것인지에 대한 논의가 이루어지고 있는데 버내큘러를 초월할 필요가 있다고 보는 견해도 있고 버내큘러를 재인식할 필요가 있다고 보는 견해도 있다. 어느 쪽이든 버내큘러와 제도가 대립되는 관계에 있으면서도 혼성적인 관계도 있다는 것을 인정하고 있으며 수사학이나 민속학 등의 분야에서도 그 둘의 대립적이면서도 혼성적인 관계를 강조하고 있다. 최근에는 디지털 버내큘러도 많이 논의되고 있는데 특히 하워드의 전자 혼성성과 버내큘러적 웹이라는 개념이 유용하다. 버내큘러적 웹을 통해 사람들이 디지털 공간에서 움직이고 행동하면 버내큘러와 제도의 전자 혼성성 덕분에 버내큘러적 권위를 행세하면서도 자신도 모르게 제도의 영향을 받기도 한다. 다른 많은 학자들도 이와 같은 문제를 다루고 있는데 버내큘러적 지식의 형성, 시장원리라는 제도적 요건의 불가피성, 음악이나 정치적 담론에서 버내큘러와 제도의 충돌, 버내큘러적 권위와 문화적 전용(轉用), 버내큘러와 디지털 현장성의 관계, 버내큘러적인 연행에서 버내큘러적 관행으로의 이행, 버내큘러적 표현의 양가성과 부정적인 요소의 증폭 위험 등과 같은 다양한 주제를 논하고 있다. 이전의 아날로그 버내큘러와 오늘날의 디지털 버내큘러의 차이가 있다면 공간에 대한 인식에 있을 것이다. 다시 말하면 인간이 소통하는 방법과 공동체라는 개념이 달라졌다는 것이다. 따라서 세계적으로 확장된 공동체에서 버내큘러를 새롭게 인식할 필요가 있다. 그렇지 않으면 소위 드루킹 댓글 조작 사건 등에서 볼 수 있듯이 디지털 버내큘러가 남용될 가능성이 있다.

The concept of vernacular, which originally refers to a language rooted in the land, has been mentioned often in a variety of fields in the United States, from linguistics to cultural anthropology, architecture, literary criticism, rhetoric, folk religious studies, and folklore. In the 1960s, the term was used in cultural anthropology to contrast with the institutional; in the field of architecture it was used in similar fashion to refer to elements that were distinguished from the academy or high design. More recently in architectural studies, there has been a discussion over whether vernacular is still a valid term, with some calling for leaving it behind and others calling for a rethinking of the concept. Both sides, though, agree that the vernacular and the institutional exist in a relationship that is at once oppositional and hybrid. In other fields as well, such as rhetoric and folklore, this oppositional yet hybrid relationship is also emphasized. Recently, there has been much discussion concerning the digital vernacular, and Robert Glenn Howards concepts of electronic hybridity and the vernacular web are useful here. As people move and act in digital space through vernacular webs, they both exercise vernacular authority and are influenced－often unknowingly－by the institutional, all thanks to the electronic hybridity of the vernacular and the institutional. Many other scholars have dealt with the topic of the digital vernacular as well, dealing with subjects including the formation of vernacular knowledge, the inevitability of the institutional condition of the market principle, the clash of the vernacular and the institutional in the arenas of music and political discourse, vernacular authority and cultural appropriation, the relationship between the vernacular and digital locality, the move from vernacular performance to vernacular practice, and the ambivalence of vernacular expression and the dangers of amplification. If there is a difference between the analog vernacular of the previous era and the digital vernacular of today, it is in the perception of space. That is, the ways in which people communicate, and their concepts of community, have changed. Thus there is the need for a new understanding of the vernacular in these global communities. Without such an understanding, we may be vulnerable to misuses of the digital vernacular, as can be seen in recent events such as the Druking Online Comment Manipulation Scandal.
