dc.description.abstract | Harbin, emerging in the early 20th century as a crucial hub in Russia's transcontinental railway network, transformed into a hub for profound East-West cultural exchange. The city took on a European-style identity, centered around the Orthodox Cathedral. In the 1920s, China assumed control, leading to the construction of Confucian shrines and Buddhist temples tailored to the local Chinese population. The establishment of the Manchukuo state in 1932 ushered in Japanese rule over the region. Against a backdrop of dynamic political shifts, Harbins demographic diversified through the settlement of immigrants from Russia, Eastern
Europe, Central Asia, and East Asia. This amalgamation gave rise to a unique multi-religious social milieu, turning Harbin into a religious smorgasbord featuring Russian Orthodox, Catholic, Jewish, Armenian Orthodox, Ukrainian Orthodox, Lutheran, Islamic, Confucian, Buddhist, and other religious traditions. The visits of Korean intellectuals to Harbin during the 1930s and 40s found expression in literary works and travelogues, where the Orthodox Cathedral becomes a prominent thematic backdrop. These narratives highlight the significance of religious practices, such as liturgical ceremonies and seasonal observances. The ostensibly European appearance of Harbin played a pivotal role in sparking exotic imaginings among Korean intellectuals during this historical period, intricately connected to the city's diverse religious landscape | ko_KR |
