Abstract

In this paper, I have attempted to explain why Petrarca sent letters directly to Cicero in the underworld, as well as how he viewed literature with regard to classical texts. Concerning the former, the paper demonstrates three things: a struggle against the fear of death, a new philosophy against scholasticism, and an affection for Rome and Italy. Regarding the latter, the paper emphasizes that Petrarca adhered to the principle of imitatio et aemualatio.
