행정학 연구에서 데이터 시각화는 활성화되고 있는가?: 한국행정학보 및 한국정책학회보(2008년~2017년) 게재 논문을 중심으로

Abstract

데이터 시각화 방법론은 그동안 꾸준히 발전되어 왔으며, 언론, 정부 보도자료 뿐만 아니라 학술연구에서도 그 중요성을 인정받아 왔다. 특히 빅데이터 분석 방법론이 빠르게 발전하면서 데이터 시각화의 활용은 더욱 일반화 되고 있다. 그렇다면 행정학 학술논문에서 데이터 시각화 활용정도는 지속적으로 증가하고 있는가? 증가하고 있다면 다양한 시각화 기법들이 적절히 사용되고 있는가? 본 연구는 지난 10년 동안(2008-2017년)의 행정학 학술연구(한국행정학보 및 한국정책학회보에 게재된 일반기고논문)의 데이터 시각화 정도를 양적 및 질적 측면에서 분석해 보았다. 양적 측면은 전체 지면에서 시각화 된 분석이 차지하는 비중으로 측정하였으며, 분석 결과 양적 측면에서 데이터 시각화 정도는 10년 전과 비교하여 볼 때, 미미하게 증가하였을 뿐이다. 질적 측면에서 데이터 시각화를 평가해보면 다양성 및 수준 측면에서 특별히 개선되었다는 증거를 찾을 수 없었다. 다양성 측면에서는 기술통계 분석을 위한 시각화가 주를 이루고 있으며, 수준 측면에서는 해외 학술지에 게재된 논문과 비교하여 보았을 때 시각화의 수준이 높다고 할 수 없었다. 나아가 행정학 연구에서 데이터 시각화의 활용가능성을 분산분석, 상관관계분석, 회귀분석의 예시를 통해 제시하였다.

Data visualization techniques have been developed consistently, and the importance of data visualization has been acknowledged not only in the media and governmental press releases, but also in research papers. The use of data visualization is being generalized as big data analysis techniques develop rapidly. Given this, we ask if the use of data visualization in public administration research papers is increasing consistently. If it is increasing, are the various visualization techniques being used properly? This study analyzed the quantitative and qualitative extent of data visualization in published research papers in Korean Public Administration Review and Korean Policy Studies Review from 2008 to 2017. We measured the quantitative extent by measuring the relative weight of visualized analysis among total pages. The results show that the quantitative extent of data visualization has increased only slightly compared to 10 years ago. We measured the qualitative extent by looking at the variety and level of data visualization, and we concluded that there is no evidence that the qualitative extent of data visualization has improved. In terms of variety, visualization for descriptive statistics was mainstream. And in terms of level, it was not better than that of foreign journals. Furthermore, we propose the usability of data visualization by presenting examples of analysis of variance, correlation analysis, and regression.
