- Abstract
- Background: To determine the population attributable risk (PAR) of major risk factors for ischemic stroke in the Korean pop-ulation. Methods: Literature searches and quality assessment of previous studies were conducted to select relevant reports about the relative risk and prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, smoking, atrial fibrillation, obesity, is-chemic heart disease, and stroke for ischemic stroke. Using those selected papers, the PAR of each risk factor was calculated and reported according to age group and gender. Results: The PARs in men were 19.9-30.5% for hypertension, 26.5% for smoking, 6.6-23.5% for obesity, 2.8-7.2% for diabetes, 2.8-4.0% for hypercholesterolemia, 3.5% for atrial fibrillation, 3.3% for stroke history, and 0.8% for ischemic heart disease. The PARs in women were 17.1-26.6% for hypertension, 4.1-7.2% for diabetes, 5.4% for obesity, 3.3-4.7% for hypercholesterolemia, 3.2% for smoking, 2.8% for atrial fibrillation, 2.5% for stroke history, and 0.7% for ischemic heart disease. Conclusion: We are reporting PARs of major risk factors in Korea, which can be used to prioritize preventive strategies for ischemic stroke effectively in our society.
