8세기 극문학 『말라띠마다바』(Mālatīmādhava)를 통해 본 인도의 여성과 수행

Abstract

본 논문은 8세기 산스끄리뜨 극작가 바바부띠(Bhavabhūti)가 지은 희곡 『말라띠마다바(Malatimadhava)』를 통해 당대의 인도의 여성과 수행에 대해서 알아보고자 한다. 『말라띠마다바』에는 불교 여성 수행자와 샤이비즘(Śaivism) 딴뜨라를 수행하는 여성 수행자가 등장하며, 그들은 극중에서 남녀 주인공의 사랑을 이끌기도 하고 방해하기도 한다. 그러나 출가 수행자는 본디 세상일에 관여하지 않는 것이 일반적이므로, 『말라띠마다바(Malatimadhava)』에서 수행자 여성들이 맡는 역할은 독특하여 주목할 만하다. 본 논문에서는 남녀의 사랑이야기를 다루는 고전 산스끄리뜨 극작품에서 수행자 여성이 이처럼 주도적인 역할을 할 수 있는 이유를 작품 내적인 측면과 외적인 측면에서 다각도로 분석하고자 한다. 이러한 작업을 통해, 8세기경 샤이비즘과 불교가 종교적인 주도권을 겨루던 역사적인 상황을 문학사적인 측면에서 읽어낼 수 있으며, 당시 인도의 여성 수행자들에 대한 이해를 심화할 수 있을 것이다.

This paper aims to explore the depiction of women and their religious practices in 8th-century Sanskrit playwright Bhavabhuti's play, "Malatimadhava." Within the play, we encounter female practitioners of Buddhism and Śaivism, engaging in the love story of the main characters while simultaneously supporting and obstructing it. Considering that ascetic practitioners typically abstain from involvement in worldly affairs, the distinctive roles assumed by the female practitioners in "Malatimadhava" are noteworthy. This study seeks to analyze the reasons behind the proactive roles of female practitioners in the classical Sanskrit play dealing with a love affair, examining both intrinsic and extrinsic aspects of the work. Through such analysis, we aim to uncover the historical context of the 8th century, where Śaivism and Buddhism contested religious authority. This literary exploration contributes to a deeper understanding of the circumstances surrounding female practitioners in ancient India during that period.
