Russian Word Order from the Cognitive-Linguistic Perspective

Abstract

The problem of word order has been one of the longstanding topics in Russian linguistics. With a rich case marking system, Russian has relatively free word order compared to English. The seemingly free word order, however, is not unfettered but is constrained on the level of discourse- functional pragmatics. In this thesis, I summarized the theoretical frameworks for analyzing Slavic word order, such as Functional Sentence Perspective (FSP) and Communicative Dynamism (CD). I also address complications of terminologies inherent in the previous study of Russian word order. In addition to summarizing previous studies, I will argue that information in linearization structure exhibits a non-monotonic flow of value in Russian. I focused on the relative cognitive salience of sentence peripheries and how they overshadow the middle of a sentence. This approach complements previous research that captures the monotonic increase of information value in the linear order. The corpus of this research is public speeches and interviews of Russian President Vladimir Putin. I intend to analyze Russian word order on both hearer-oriented auditory and speaker-oriented praxis levels.

어순은 러시아 어학에서 꾸준히 관심을 받았던 주제 중 하나이다. 형태적 격표지를 가지는 슬라브어 중 하나인 러시아어는 영어에 비해 자유로운 어순을 가진다. 러시아어 어순은 형태적 격표지로 인해 문법 성분을 표지해야 한다는 부담이 없으며, 대신 화용적 기능에 봉사한다. 선행 연구는 러시아어 어순의 화용적 기능을 논리적 주어논리적 술어,심리적 주어-심리적 술어와 같이 화용론의 범위 밖 개념들을 통해 설명해 왔다. 본 논문의 첫 번째 목표 중 하나는 러시아어 어순 연구사의 이러한 복잡한 개념들을 설명하는 데 있다. 더 나아가 필자는 기능적 문장 분석 관점과 (Functional Sentence Perspective, FSP) 같이 프라그 학파가 슬라브어 어순 분석에 더 적합한 이론적 틀을 고안하기 위해 기울인 노력 역시 소개한다. 본 연구는 러시아어로 된 문헌들이 일반적으로 제시하는 러시아어 어순의 양상 역시 요약한다. 선행 연구들의 요약 이후, 필자는 실제 러시아어 어순에 한걸음 더 가까이 다가간 접근법을 제시한다. 이 접근법은 프라그 학파의 비이분법적 접근과 최근의 인지적 접근법을 포함한다. 더 세분화된 정보 위상을 통한 러시아어 어순 분석에 더해, 필자는 러시아어 어순에서의 정보 위상이 비단조적으로 분포한다고 주장한다. 이 주장은 러시아어의 자유로운 어순이 정보 위상의 단조적인 증가를 반영하도록 구현된다는 기존 연구들의 가정을 보완한다. 분석 대상 텍스트는 러시아 대통령 블라디미르 푸틴의 연설과 면담 내용이다. 필자는 어순의 면밀한 분석을 통해 선행연구들의 홍수 속 실제 언어 현상에 가장 가까운 기술과 분석을 향해 나아가는 데 기여하고자 한다.
