인간-반려견 산책 분석을 통한 인간-너머 도시의 가능성 모색

Abstract

As an alternative approach to conventional urban planning, which is characterised by anthropocentricity and modernity, there is a growing interest in the human-beyond-human and multispecies city. In Korea, many local governments have been preparing spaces for pets living with humans, such as dog playgrounds and pet culture centres, and autonomous police committees affiliated with city and provincial governors have selected and operated dog patrols that aim to improve the safety of citizens' lives through daily dog walking activities. As you can see, dog walking is not only a human activity to satisfy the instincts of dogs, but also an activity that creates new encounters in the city. Through human-dog urban walking, humans also encounter urban contradictions that are often hidden in anthropocentric cities. This study aims to redefine the human-dog hybrid, which has emerged as a new hybrid in the city through physical and emotional interaction despite its different biological characteristics, as a new appropriator of the city in the 21st century, and to explore their perception of the city. This attempt will provide the basis for a grounding in the city that reveals the urban residual spaces that go unnoticed by the gaze of the subjects assumed to be citizens in conventional urban planning discourse, triggering a variety of sensations and experiences. To explore this, participant observation was conducted with 11 adult citizens who walked their dogs at least twice a week on the same routes that the research subjects usually walked with their dogs, and semi-structured interviews were conducted. We examined animal protection laws, animal registration systems, leashes, and dog playgrounds as institutional contexts that enabled dog walking, and dog patrols as a strategy for symbiotic coexistence with previously invisible entities such as faeces, garbage, and carcasses, to understand the multispecies community entanglements that dog walking reveals. By promoting the urban rights of non-humans, as well as humans who have not been treated as normal human beings, through dog walking, we reveal that the human-beyond-human city requires a city where all things that are not two-legged can wander. Further research could extend this study by studying the urban walks of people with different statuses, such as guide dogs for the blind, who exhibit similar behaviours to dogs, but with different statuses.

인간중심성, 근대성으로 표방되는 기존의 도시계획에 대한 대안 적 접근으로 인간-너머 도시, 다종적 도시에 대한 관심이 증가하 고 있다. 국내에서도 많은 지자체에서 앞다투어 반려견 놀이터나 반려동물 문화센터와 같은 인간과 함께 살아가는 반려동물을 위한 공간을 마련하거나, 시·도지사 소속 자치경찰위원회에서는 반려견 의 일상적 산책 활동을 통해 시민 생활안전을 꾀하는 반려견 순찰 대를 선발 및 운영하고 있다. 이를 통해 알 수 있듯이 반려견 산 책은 반려견의 본능을 충족시키기 위한 인간의 활동이면서 동시에 도시의 새로운 마주침을 만들어내는 활동이기도 하다. 또한 인간- 반려견 도시 걷기를 통해 인간은 인간중심적 도시에서 가려져 있 었던 도시의 모순을 마주하기도 한다. 본 연구에서는 상이한 생물학적 특성이 있지만 신체적/정서적 상호작용을 통해 도시의 새로운 혼종체로 등장한 인간-개 혼종체 를 21세기 도시를 새롭게 전유하는 산책자로 재정의하며 이들이 감각하는 도시에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 이 시도는 기존 도시계획 담론에서 시민으로 상정하는 주체들의 시선이 알아채지 못한 도시 잔여 공간을 드러내어 다양한 감각과 경험을 유발하는 도시에 대 한 준거점의 초석을 제공할 것이다. 이를 살펴 보기 위해 반려견 과 주 2회 이상 산책하는 성인 시민 11명을 대상으로 평소 연구 대상자가 반려견과 산책하는 길을 반려견과 함께 걸으며 참여 관 찰을 시행하였으며, 반구조화된 인터뷰를 진행하였다. 반려견 산책을 가능하게 한 제도적 맥락으로 동물보호법, 동물 등록제, 목줄, 반려견 놀이터를 살펴 보았으며, 배설물, 쓰레기, 사 체와 같이 인간 바로 옆에 있었지만 비가시화되었던 존재들과 공 생공략을 위한 전략으로서 반려견 순찰대를 탐색함으로써 반려견 산책이 드러내는 다종 공동체의 얽힘을 파악하였다. 반려견이라는 비인간과의 산책을 통해 비인간뿐만 아니라 정상 인간으로 대우받 지 못한 인간에게 필요한 도시의 권리를 증진함으로써, 인간-너머 의 도시를 위해서 다리가 두 개가 아닌 모든 것들이 방랑할 수 있 는 도시가 요구됨을 밝히는 바이다. 후속 연구를 통해 시각장애인 안내견처럼 반려견과 비슷한 행동 양식을 보이지만 지위가 상이한 대상의 도시 산책을 연구함으로써 본 연구를 더 확장할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
