Persuasion에 관하여

Abstract

Jane Austen 은 죽을 무렵에 지금 Sanditoπ 이 라는 제목으로 알려진 작품을 11장 이상 썼었다. 그러나 그녀의 마지막 완성된 소설은 1815년 8월에 착수되어 그녀의 건강이 악화되는 가운데서 1816년 8월에 완성되었다. 그것은 바로 그녀가 죽기 11개월전이 되는 때였다. 이 Persuasion은 Northanger Abbey 와 함본으로 1817년 12월에 그녀의 오빠인 Henry에 의하여 출판되었다. 우리가 이 작품의 접펄과 출판에 관한 날짜를 모르더라도 이것이 그녀의 최후의 작품이라고 충분히 짐작할 수 있을 듯하다. 그 까닭은 소위 평자들이 말하는 이 소설이 지닌 가을의 색초, 즉 여주인공의 나이가 17세 또는 20세가 아니라 27세라는 것이 주는 특질과, 또한 그녀가 다소 우울하지만 즐거운 마음으로 바라보는 상정적인 가을의 정경이 일으키는 특질 때문이다. 이 소셜은 가을에 시작되며 Anne 은 다음과 같이 가을의 청취를 맛보며 들판을 산보한다.
