Mansfield Park 에 관하여

Abstract

Mansfield Park는 1811년 2월에 착수되어 1813년 여름에 완성되고， 1814년 5월에 출판되었다. Jane Austen은 언니 Cassandra에 보낸 펀지 에서 이 소설은 새로운 것에 관한 하나의 시도이며 聖職寂任에 관한 것 이라고 말하고 있다. Now 1 will try to write of something else, and it shall be a complete change of subject-ordination-I am glad to find your enquiries have ended so well. 그런데 Pinion은 Austen 이 ordination을 성직이외의 다른 것을 뜻하 고 있는지 확실치 않으나, 그것은 질서있는 사회를 지배하는 원리에 관 해서 쓰일 수 있다고 말하고 있다. It is not certain whether Jane Austen intended ordination in a sense other than clerical; contemporaneously it could be used with reference to the principles governing an orderly or civilized society. 이와 관련해서 Sotherton Court를 방문했을 때 Edmund Bertram이 다 음과 같이 말한 것을 생각하면 그 내용이 명백해 질 것이다. Sir Thomas Bertram이 슬퍼한 것은 결국 딸들에게 그들의 생활을 바 르게 이끌어 주는 실제적인 원리가 결여되어 있다는 것이며, 그들이 종 교를 믿기는 하나 그들의 마음과 기질에 아무런 도덕적 영향을 미치지 못하는 단순한 이론적인 것에 불과하다.
