Abstract

Richard Haggart는 그의 The Force of Caricature에서 Greene의 文體 를 두고 이렇게 말하고있다. Greenes Style is nervous, vivid, astringent, the vehicle of a restless and pungent imagination" 또 Evelyn Waugh는 As I have said above, the style of writing is grim. It is not a specifically literary style at all. The words are functional, devoid of sensuous attraction, of ancestry and of independent life. Literary stylists regard language as intrinsically precious and its proper use as a worthy and pleasant task. A polyglot could read Mr. Greene, lay him aside, retain a sharp memory of all he said and yet, I think, entirely forget what tongue he was using. The words are simply mathematical signs for his thought. Moreover, no relation is established between writer and reader. 라고 말하고 있다. Haggart는 nervous 하고 astringent 하다고 했고 Waugh는 rigid하다고 했는데 이는 Greene 이 英國散文의 傳結的인 美 文調라는 것을 완전히 잊어버리고-심지어는 무시해버리고 機能을 優 先으로 思想表現에만 중점을 두었다는 말이된다. 이것이 정도를 벗어나 mathematical signs for his thoughts로까지 굳어진다. 숫제 英語가 아 니 라는 통박까지 듣게된다. 그런가하면 William Healy같은 이는 散文技 法에 있어서는 目下 Greene을 따를 사람이 없을 것이라고 찬양한다.
