- Abstract
- holds a prominent position. Most dichotomous division, like The west/the east,
male/female, normal/abnormal, etc. is the scheme of decoding showing the
prominent value of the first term. Therefore IlWol displays prominent
inequality, Sun=day=light is superior to Moon=night=darkness. This paper
analyzes how the main character, In-Chuls consciousness and action decode
themselves from binary oppositional value. The Post-modern narrative discourse
from this novel breaks down binary oppositional value and searches the
possibility of coexistence with others. The attempt of breaking down the
division of binary opposition is the alternative plan overcoming self-alienation
and searching genuine identity.
This paper maintains a view that there is some connection between the
authors positional identity as a displaced person coming from North Korea in
South-Korean society and the motive of creation searching the little narrative,
marginal butchers world. This book was published serially when the powerful
dominant ideology was exercised by the military regime in Korea. This paper
considers that this environmental motive made the author search butchers
world as little narrative. Ultimately, the author resisted the ideological repression
of dominant discourse through butchers narrative.
