- Abstract
- We studied the current state of university professors compensation with a special attention to the case of Seoul National University (SNU) professors. Using the payroll data and a survey. we found that. in 1999, the average starting salary for assistant professors was $25.000 and the average salary for professors aged 60 or higher was $45.000. This level of salary is lower than the average household living expenses in urban areas reported by the Bureau of Statistics in 1996. Faculty salary was also much lower than the salary received by professionals with comparable educational attainment such as lawyers, medical doctors, and accountants. Because of unduly low level of salary, SNU professors were feeling great dissatisfaction an inequity with their pay. This is a serious problem since their performance could be negatively affected. Also this hinders SNU to recruit top professors from abroad. mostly United States. Therefore, we suggest five ways to improve the administration of faculty compensation in the final section of this paper.
