Abstract
Considering the highly dependent industrial structure of Korea, it is essential to gurantee a stable import of Japanese advanced technology. This is especially true in the electronics industry, which is among the most vital sectors. New technologies are introduced at a remarkably fast rate and the international competition is intense. We argue that the survival of Korean electronics firms depends on the availability of Japanese advanced technology. Japanese firms, concerned with a boomerang effect, are hesitant to transfer advanced technologies to Korea. Korean firms have not been in a favorable position in the neotiation for technology transfer. This is due to the inexperience in the international business negotiations and insufficient information of new technologies. In order to facilitate the import of Japanese advanced technologies in electronics industry, we propose the following two strategies. First, the Korean government should make efforts to enlarge domestic market for electronic goods. This may contribute to alleviating the Japanese concern for boomerang effect. Second, Korean firms will have to make various linkages with Japanese firms including subcontracting
