This study focuses on the changes in the Mexican labor movement in 1980s from the perspective of crisis in the corporatist system. Mexican labor corporatism, unmatched in all of Latin America, differs markedly from that found in advanced industrialized countries. It functions as a means of labor control and has been institutionalized as an integral part of mechanism of domination. Therefore, while the Mexican corporatism is similarly weakened by globalization and nco-liberal economics as in corporatist system throughout the world, it is also strongly affected by the strategy of the ruling bloc for political stability.

The neo-liberal policy of restructuration of the government is articulated in regressive labor policies. And the response of the Mexican labor movement to the government policies has been ineffectual. However, the Mexican corporatism has been found to be relatively resilient. The contraction of the rights of labor to organize, to bargain collectively, and to strike has not taken on the form of institutional reform through amendments of laws. Rather it has been pursued through repression by the coercive agencies of the state and other practices. The future prospects of the labor corporatism in Mexico relies considerably on the political reform program of the Party of Institutional Revolution and the strength of the labor movement resistance.
