Abstract
The peasant rebellion in southem Mexico led by EZLN(Ejercito Zapatista de Liberacion Nacional) is rooted in the profound agricultural crisis of the state of Chiapas culminating in the neoliberal reform of ejido system in 1992. The indigenous cum peasant rebellion also shows the long cherished dream for a utopia of the Mayan indians, seeking for the restoration of a genuine ethnic community broken down by the neoliberal modemization project. Even though the forms of the struggle which the EZLN has waged has been armed stuggles at the high stage of radicalization of the peasant movement in the Chiapas, their objectives are confined to armed reformisim and communitarian democracy. The Chiapas uprising is demanding a reversal of neo-liberal policies and genuine democratization of the Mexican political system. It would serve as a wake-up call to the neoliberal upsurge of the developing countries including Mexico.
