Abstract
This paper examines how Japan education is organized and administered in higher education in North America. Fourteen representative institutions are selected for review and comparison. From this, the following characteristics are drawn out regarding Japan education in North America. First, Japan education is mostly carried out through three types of educational program, i.e., department of Japanese language and literature (or department of Japanese studies), discipline-based program, and inter-disciplinary area studies program. Second, except for language and literature education, the educational curriculum is run with great flexibility. Third, practical education is strongly emphasized. Fourth, active responses are made to the changing demands both from the students and larger society. Fifth, educational efficiency and effectiveness are sought for through various networks and cooperation systems. In conclusion, this paper underlines the need to build firmly the basic infrastructure for Japan education and researches in Korea.
