Abstract
Objectives: The objectives of this study were to meavure the influence of smoking in mokified experimental gingivitis model and find out the partial mechanism of gingivitis in smokers.
Methods: We used the modified experimental gingivitis model with toothshield. 67 male volunteers with each denifrice for premolar region. The gingivitis index (GI), plaque index(PI), the concentration of with each dentigrice for premolar region. The gingivitis index (GI), plaque index (PI), the concentration of MMP-9 and IL-1 βin GCF were evaluated at the baseline, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th week(recovery period) in toothshield sites. Repeated measure ANOVA and one-way ANOVA were used for the time series comparison and comparison among the groups in SPSS 12.OK.
Results: 1. The differences of GI and PI among smokers, quit-smokers and non-smokers were not significant (p >0.05). but, the tren of GI was different among 3 groups. (P<0.05). The differences between smokers and non-smokers or among 3 groups were signigicant in Tukey analysis.
Conclusions: Although we could not inspect the clinical change in gingiva, the concentration of MMP-9 and IL-1 β increased significantly in smokers. It is suggested smokeing can hide the inflammation sign at first glance, but progress the inflammation process in gingival tissue.
