Abstract
There has been plenty of disputes on whether the term 'syncretism' can be applied to Korean Protestantism. In the western tradition, syncretism received negative implications during the theological controversies and this has come to influence the use of the terminology used in the academic studies of religions. Also, in Korea syncretism has come to take on negative connotations. Especially since 1960s this meaning became firmly fixed. When discussing the interaction between traditional religions and Christianity, syncretism functioned as a diluting argument that inhibited a clear understanding of the phenomenon. In academia the term syncretism has been used with such a scope that it covered all religious phenomena. It was also mainly used to describe certain religious traditions pejoratively.
