- Abstract
- This thesis proposes to anatomize the ritual structure of film in relation to reality. Here film is analogous to the temple which by ritualization would articulate the potentialities of reality to the utmost. By hermeneutics of discovery temple probes into the details of everyday life, and thus enlarges and emphasizes the things of which we might be forgetful if we sank into the bitterness of life. It is exactly religion that would is discovered through this process. Likely, film provides ritual spaces where are enacted the invisible depth and desires of realities. By anatomy of the ordinary, therefore, film give a focusing lens to the incongruity and conflict in our fleeting experiences. Just as ritual invokes thought and transforms one person into another, so film enables us to cross over to the unknown areas. Compared with other artistic and expressive genres, the distinctive function of film is to use visual realism of its own, so that it may acquire the prominently symbolic means which make its ritual effect powerful. In addition, film is the art of shaping time, just as religious rites create the new temporal level. Film discover, transforms, and repeats the ordinary time. By foregoing analogies and others, the ritual structure of film may be revealed to us step by step.
