Abstract

This paper deals with the results of historical anthropology and anthropological approaches into modern family in Korea. Religion, the cultural system of symbolism, needs to be understood not only as the individual expression of subjective ideas but also as the social expression within interactive relationship. The historical anthropological approach into Confucian culture in Korea is important for discerning the distinctiveness of Korean Confucianism in historical context and for deeply understanding the emphasis on practical aspects and liturgical interest which are the characteristics of Korean Confucianism. We also explored the historcial context about how agnatic principle and ancestral cult had been connected with socio-economic discrimination system. Compared with Chinese Confucianism Korean Confucianism distinctively showed much more interest in the political and psychological values including social status and prestige than in the material values.
