- Abstract
- This research is to discuss the significance of translating the Bible in Korea. It made a great contribution to social, cultural and religious change by means of Bible-translation in Hangul such as the enlightenment of ordinary Korean and the Hangul popularization. Ross was the first man who translates the Bible in Korea. He had to learn Korean language, not only for the Bible translation, but also for the evangelization of Korea. But it is clear that Ross considers the women and the poor as the object of his translation rather than the literacy upper-class. His decision to translate into the language of the common people was a kind of revolution that ran counter to the social structure in korean society. In that situation, women and the poor were absolutely deprived of the opportunity of education owing to social discrimination. In history, the sculptures' languages had an authority without distinction of western and eastern religious cultures. It would be the exclusive rights for the elite of religious society to interpretate the sculptures. So the translating the sculptures means to dissolve the authority of interpretation from the men of the cloth. Even in German, Martin Luther's Bible-translation had the peoples understood the Bible individually with their own language and its movement resulted to build public school and education.
