- Abstract
- In most of Jeju's village-myths, two gods (especially gods and
goddesses) in the same village or village temple are separated by
'impurity of pork', specially called 'Dotgoki-impuriry'. In this paper,
the author examines the meanings and functions of Dotgoki-impurity in
Jeju-city and Jo-chun myun's village-myths, based on the reationships
between the geographical feature, the characteristic of village god/
goddess, and the usage of Dotgoki-impurity. After analyzing the
village-myths' inner structure and the general taboos on warnen in Jeju
island, the author concludes that there are two main functions in
Dotgoki-impuriry used in myths. First, Dotgoki-impurity was used
ideologically to strengthen the sex discrimination among the village
members. Second, Dotgoki-impunty in myths helped to inherit the
taboo effectively among the female villagers for the practical uses.
