Abstract
The conflicts in human society are growing with such social changes as
globalization and multiculturalization. Peace education, which aims for
conflict resolution and peaceful coexistence, plays a crucial role in that
regard. Peace education is particularly important in Korea, as it has been
divided for over 50 years. This study investigates how peace education is
being provided at different levels of school and suggests the plans to
enhance the effectiveness of peace education in schools. Two methods have
been used: observation of social studies instruction for peace education and
interviews with social studies teachers. The result shows that different forms
of peace education is being practiced depending on the level of school,
teachers major field, characteristics and content of the subject matter, and
students level of interest. More effective peace education can be provided
in schools by enhancing the interconnectedness among different levels of
school and maximizing the unique strengths of each level of school.
