dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this study was to analyze the curricula
and the present status of teaching faculties of 31 junior colleges of nursing among total 36 school in Korea. The data were collected through face-to face interviews of teaching faculties and review of school bulletins they provided, for the period of 4 months from December, 1976 to March, 1977. Final conclusions and suggestions drawn from this study are as follows: More than half of the junior nursing colleges have no written school philosophies or objectives, or very vague ones, if they have. Only one school mentions its objectives very clearly on human being, service, health, nursing etc. Educational objectives of junior college of Korea for the purpose of educating students toward middle class of technical people should be changed to the objectives of beginning technical ones. Values of technical occupation should be recognized by the society as soon as possible and should be educated from the early period of life. Nursing leaders including nursing educators should also accept that diploma program of Korea is technical in character and should systematize the whole nursing field in order to prevent further confusion and chaos. Elective courses of liberal arts and sciences are selected by schools themselves rather than by stndents. Therefore students have to take all of the courses offered by their schools. This type of problem will be, to some extent, solved in the junior colleges working in conjunction with universities by the utilization of the professors in the university. Laboratory works of supportive sciences are not so active in many schools. The main reasons are lack of budget, prepared faculties, and facilities. Educational courses required for the preparation of school nurse should be curtailed because the main functions and responsibilities of school nurse are not class-room lectures but health maintenance and health education of the students. Twenty four schools offer the educational courses and remained 6 schools do not. The number of hours required for compulsory subjects of nursing are very different depending upon schools. Many schools require the students to have practice during the evening, night and even in the vacation. Since there arc no instructors during these periods, they should consider this problem seriously. The junior college adopts the unit system which is different from the credit system. Since the transformation of academic record taken in the junior college to the university credits in case of transference is very complicated, it can be suggested that the junior college should rather utilize the credit system. The number of faculty members at the present time is only 59% of the planned number. The main reasons of this shortage are lack of shool budget, qualified teachers and strong intention to recruit the qualified people. This shortage produces lack of clinical instruction which results in low quality of care. We should plan to overcome the quality and quantity of faculties on the long-term basis and should in the mean time let the head nurses and supervisors be participated in the teaching as part-time instructors in the clinical areas. Any school which has been prepared in the quantity and quality of faculties and in which physical facilities of laboratory and library arc available may start experimental study of 2 year junior collcjo program. | - |
