dc.description.abstract | The principal purpose of this study is to examine the diachronical sound changes of ㅈ, ㅅ in Pyeongbuk dialed(originally Pyeongbuk Yongcheon dialect). Aditonally we can see how these sound changes are related to so-called "Palatalization", and how ㅈ and ㅅ are organized into consonantal system.
It is certained that ㅈ, ㅅ in Pyeongbuk dialect have experienced the same sound change. It can be refered to as "Dorsalization of laminate". that is, [ʦ] is changed into [ʧ], [s] into [ʃ]. Schematically five stages of sound changes, taking an instance of are as follows. Here [ʦ. s] are What is called "Palatalization" is defined as sound change that consonantal allophones are, because of phonetic similarity, reinterpreted as dorsals. So I would like to propose that "Dorsalization" should be substituted for "Palatalization". And "Dorsalization" in Pyeongbuk dialect did not occur because ㄷ did not have dorso-palatal allophone(ㄷPalatalization), and because there is little possobility of allophones of ㅅ and ㅎ falling into confusion(ㅎ Palatalization"). Finally phonological process in Pyeongbuk dialect demonstrate that ㅈ, ㅅ, ㄷ sounds are organized into natural class, and these sounds are sub-classfied into ㅈ, ㅅ and ㄷ. | - |
