Diverse trends of thoughts such as the liberalism, the radicalism, the

socialism and the communism affected the formation of the New Women in

Colonial Korea. Based upon cases of socialist and communist New Women,

this article focuses on their views and questions on class, nation, and

women. Socialist and communist New Women of this period actively

participated in the organization of feminist movements and the education of

colonial Korea. They introduced Marxist-Leninist theories on women, and

interpreted and applied them accordingly in view of the colonial reality of

the day. Socialist and communist New Women criticized on the limitation of

the modernization project proposed by liberalist women and instead set their

own alternative modernity. Though there were a wide range of differences

of opinions on the strategy of achieving modernization, these women placed

serious importance on the role of tradition in achieving modernization.
