- Abstract
- Hwanghae Province was the region with the low military tension during the early Joseon period. But this province had the duplicate importance in the military aspect; the communications zone of Pyeongan Province and the front line of the capital, Hanyang.
The self-contained defense system in Hwaghae Province was framed after the invasions of Ching China in the early 17th century. The government strengthened the military installations of the supreme headquarters in Hwangju that set up after the invasion of Japan, and newly constructed nine fortresses at the strategic points of the inland passes, from Hwangju (west) to Suan(east) in the late 17th century. The Castle of Taebaek was built in the Pyungsan besides five existing castles near the main line to the capital for the defence of the main military route.
