Abstract
This study aims to examine the course that a city park was regarded as a civilized space and was represented a special image with the discourses of enlightenment, health, self and taste etc. in korean modern novels. The city park was shaped both the thing newly prepared and democratically rediscovered the existing elegant space in the colonial modern society. At the age of enlightenment and the early age of colony, the city park was a new artificial preparation which was emphasized as a symbol of modern civilization. Meanwhile from 1930"s, the city park was shaped with rediscovery the suburb nature as the space for leisure to escape the dreary of a city. At first, we examine Yeom, Sang-seop"s, Park, Tae-won"s and Lee, Tae-jun"s works for explaining the process of newly prepared park being narrated. In their novels, newly prepared park was described to self-indulgent space related to consumption because most citizen were migrated laborer and alienated from leisure at that time. The intelligent in 1930"s recognized the limits of newly prepared park as a commercial nature and claimed the nature-garden which escapes from city disgust to new nature space as a taste. This emphasis on the aesthetic of nature connected to the Fascist thinking like constrction through destroying, with conquering the nature and merging the nature to city so constructing a new utopia. At this point, we could criticize the value and the limits of Lee, Hyo-seok"s novels with the narrtive of recovered park.
