Abstract
The nineteenth century was a period which saw active exchanger be carried out between the scholars and literati of Chosŏn and Qing. Such exchanges and spiritual friendships that extended beyond borders played an important role in the establishment of direct links between the two countries" literary circles. First formed during the reign of Emperor Jiaqing of Qing, the Changzhou School (常州派) emerged as the leading force within literary circles during then subsequent reigns of Emperors Daoguang and Xianfeng. In this regard, scholars from this Changzhou School placed great importance on the conducting of exchanges with the scholars of Chosŏn(especially the ch"usailp"a(秋史一派)). This over time led to the formal establshment of the exchanges between the two groups. To this end, an analysis of the exchanges between the scholars of the Cangzhou School and those of Chosŏn helps to shed some crucial insight into the characteristics of the two countries" literary circles during the 19th century.

More to the point .this paper analyzes the exchanges between Yi Sangjŏk (l803~1865) and the scholars from the Changzhou School. Yi Sanjŏk, who was Kim Chŏnghui"s disciple, saw his repute amongst domestic and foreign literati rise during the reigns of King Sunjo and Ch"olchong (which coincided with the reigns of Emperor Daoguang and Xiangfeng in Qing). The exchanges between Yi and the scholars from the Changzhouu School resulted in many elements of the latter being introduced to Chousŏn"s literary circles. These included the trend towards the practice of literary penchants for Zhenxingqing(眞性情 authenticity) and Yinei Yanwai(意內言外 implicit beauty of language), and the appearance if Songbai Zhijian(松柏之堅 character as lofty as a pine or arborvitae tree). This relationship between Yi and the scholars from the Changzhou School was passed on to their respective disciples. To this end, the Changzhou School can be seen as having greatly influenced the future direction of Chosŏn literary circles.
