Abstract
This thesis considers the viscoelastic flows in a 4:1 planar contraction
geometry with robust numerical algorithms. Discontinuous Galerkin (DG)
method was applied to the constitutive equations to increase the accuracy
of numerical solutions. The governing equations were rewritten as a
discrete Elastic Viscous Stress Splitting-G (DEVSS-G) form. Governing
equations were formulated with a finite element method. A fractional fourstep
method was employed as a transient scheme. With these stable
algorithms, complicated flow fields predicted by linear Phan-Thien Tanner
model could be analyzed. In addition, vortex dynamics and the flow behavior
were compared with those predicted by the Oldroyd-B model.
