Abstract
Machine translation and inference engine need a way of representing
the lexicons. The way should enumerate the semantic meanings of the
lexicons and also express the compositional aspects of the
meanings. Pustejovsky (1991,1995) proposed Generative Lexicon (GL) as
a solution for this semantic enumeration and compositionality. Generative
Lexicon has many semantic structures and semantic operations to capture
the creative use of words in novel contexts and to explain the polymorphic
nature of language.
To use lexicons in machine translation and inference engine, the next
step is building this Generative Lexicon in computational dictionary
format. The lexicons are usually defined by several linguists, who cooperate
in building the lexicons. Even if they work under the same
Generative Lexicon, they may have different disciplines on enumerations and semantic constraints. Also they may not share the interest in
computational inference modules working with the semantic
constraints. There are needs both for flexible representations of lexicons
which can merge different works of linguists and for describing the
lexicons in independent and easily-transformable forms with inference
engine.
