dc.description.abstract | This study is intended to find the perception of those contemporaries and the
social evaluations about the modern fashion for clothing and the areas in which modern fashion appeared, spread and prevailed by analyzing the articles about the clothing fashion published by the press from the 1920s to the 1930s. The abolition of the inherited social status system, the finding of individual dignity, and the introduction of the capitalistic production methods built up the environments for mass consumption, and also the appearance of various media made it possible to transmit and spread fashion. These conditions contributed to the advent and spreading of modern fashion. The results of this research about the social evaluations of modern fashion for clothing and the perception of fashion areas are as follows. First, fashion was regarded as the reflection of the spirit of the age and modernity. Second, fashion was seen as the index of advanced sense and the Western world-oriented property. Third, fashion was evaluated as the expression of individual desires and the object of collective imitation. Fourth, fashion was thought of as an opportunity to form beauty sense and to change styles. The social evaluation of modern fashion extended to the perception of the areas from which fashion started, and people who followed fashion. At that time, fashion was thought to be transmitted in the order of the Western world, Japan, Gyeongseong (now Seoul) of Joseon, and provincial areas. The place in Joseon )in which fashion took place and showed itself exclusively was Gyeongseong, within which Jingogae and Jongro made a distinct difference from other regions in fashion. It was found that the provincial areas of those days were not equipped with external and internal conditions good enough to generate fashion, but maintained old-fashioned characteristics of space. Gyeongseong tended to be thought of differently from provincial areas in that it was the place where fashion was generated and formed. | - |
