여진족 추장 하질이(何叱耳)의 실록상 이표기에 대하여

Abstract

조선왕조 전반기 즉 17세기까지의 조선왕조실록에는 여진족에 대한 기록이 매우 자주 나타난다. 그들은 조선인의 생명과 재산을 늘 위협하는 존재였으므로 그들의 동정 파악을 위해 눈을 떼지 않았던 것이다. 그런데 여진족은 한 무리의 씨족이 아니라 여러 족류가 공존하고 있었으므로 이들의 관계나 신분을 올바로 파악하는 것은 이들의 요구나 행동에 효과적으로 대처하기 위하여 꼭 필요한 것이었다. 이 글에서는 이러한 기록 가운데에서 매우 특이한 표기로 기록된 한 여진족 추장의 인명에 대해서 고찰하고자 한다. 그 추장의 이름은 "하질이(何叱耳)"이다. 이는 만주어 /hashū/를 표기한 것인데 이 연구에서는 이와 관련된 몇 가지 사실을 논의하면서 그의 이름을 나타낸 여러 표기에 대해서 고찰하고자 한다. 이 글은 실록에 나타난 인명의 이표기를 논의하는 글이지만 아래에서는 언어학적 설명보다는 역사적 사실과 역사적 사실에 대한 인용이 상당 부분을 차지한다. 그 이유는 실록이라는 텍스트의 특성에 기인한다.

In this paper a transcription of the name of a Jurchen chieftain is discussed. All proper names of the Jurchens including personal names are recorded in Chinese characters in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty. Most of them are written using sound of the Chinese characters. But the name of one chieftain was written using semantic value of the Chinese characters. At the first time his identity was confusing to Korean as his name was called differently. Among these names there were 하질이 <ha-jil-i>. These Chinese characters represents 'hashū', the meaning of which is "left handed" in Jurchen(Manchu).
