통일과 북한에 관한 사회조사의 동향과 실태

Abstract

이 연구는 1980년대 후반부터 실시된 각종 사회조사에서 북한 및 통일관련 문항을 다룬 경우와 북한 및 통일에 관해 연구를 하거나 업무를 수행하는 기관에서 실시해 온 소위 통일의식조사 자료를 이용해서 북한 및 통일 관련 조사의 동향과 실태를 살펴보았다. 이 연구를 위해 90개의 사회조사 및 통일의식조사 자료가 이용되었다. 이 연구에서는 먼저 그동안 수많은 북한 및 통일에 관한 조사가 실시되어 왔음에도 불구하고 각 조사들이 비슷한 문항을 사용하지만 표현 및 척도가 동일하지 않은 문항을 사용하여 시계열적 비교 분석에 어려움이 크다는 사실을 밝히고 있다. 그러나 2000년대 들어 대표적인 한국종합사회조사나 서울대의 통일의식조사 등은 동일한 설문항을 매 해 조사에서 반복 실시하여 시계열적으로 정확한 비교 분석이 가능하게 하고 있음을 밝혔다. 이 연구에서는 통일의 시기와 가능성, 통일의 당위성과 필요성, 통일 후의 변화, 북한에 대한 인식, 북한의 변화에 대한 인식 그리고 북한의 전쟁도발 가능성 및 북핵 관련 문항이 표현방식, 의미, 척도 등의 방법론적 측면에서 어떻게 변화해 왔는지를 분석하였다.

This study investigates the trends of questions of the issues on North Korea and unification in general social surveys which covers North Korea and unifications issues and of so called Attitude Surveys toward Unification since late 1980s. 90 social surveys and surveys on North Korea and unification are utilized for this study. It is hard to see how attitudes toward various issues related to North Korea and unification have changed among Koreans because most surveys have adopted their own questions and scales when they measure various attitudes although they seem to repeat very similar questions from prior research. Repeat questions in following surveys make researcher see how attitudes toward North Korea and unification have changed across periods, and several recent surveys on North Korea and unification implement repeat questions and scales to make it possible to trace time-series changes in attitudes. This study examines how questions and scales have changed in the attitudes toward necessity of unification, timing of unification, and possible changes after unification in the realm of unification. Also, this study examines the changing patterns of questions on attitudes toward North Korea, social changes in North Korea and possibility of war between North and South Korea.
