조선전기 방외인의 산수유람 -추강 남효온을 중심으로-

Abstract

조선시대 문인들에게 산수유람은 어떤 의미를 지니고 있었을까? 산수유람은 이들에게 호연지기를 기르는 계기가 되기도 했고, 문학창작의 산실이 되기도 했다. 또 문인들은 산수유람을 통해 백성들의 삶을 관찰하기도 하고, 벗과 풍류를 즐기는 여유를 누리기도 했다. 조선시대 문인들이 산수를 어떻게 인식했고, 산수유람을 통해 무엇을 얻었으며, 유람의 체험을 문학적으로 어떻게 형상화했는지 살피는 것은, 우리 삶 속에서의 자연의 의미와 자연과 문학의 관계를 되짚어보는 계기가 될 수 있을 거시다.

조선전기 문인인 추강 남효온(1454-1492)은 산수벽으로 유명한 문인 중의 한 명이다. 그는 금강산, 지리산, 개성 등을 유람하고 여러 편의 산수시와 산수유기를 남겼다. 선행연구에서 남효온은 조선전기 방외인으로 분류되었고 그의 문학 또한 방외인 문학을 대표하고 있다. 남효온은 현실세계에서 뜻을 펴지 못했고, 그에 따를 실의한 마음을 술과 방랑으로 극복하고자 했다. EH한 그의 시세계에는 선계를 지향하는 의식이 나타나고 있다.

본고는 남효온의 산수유람이 취향과 수향 및 신선사상과 긴밀한 연관성을 맺고 있다고 보며, 이 관련 양상을 파악하여 산수유람이 남효온에게 어떤 의미를 지니고 있었는지 밝히고자 한다.

For Nam, Hyo-on(南孝溫), landscape has something in common with "Soohyang (睡鄕)" and "Chweehyang (醉鄕)." "Soohyang (睡鄕)" and "Chweehyang (醉鄕)" as well as landscape are the space where people can stand aloof from real life while forgetting any distress and agony in life. However, scenic beauty cannot guarantee a permanent pleasure just like "Soohyang (睡鄕)" and" Chweehyang (醉鄕)" only guide us into temporal pleasures. Nam, Hyo-on cherished his own yearning and curiosity toward leading an immortal life in nature. He quested for becoming a supernatural existence through regimen and tried to feel immortality during landscape excursion where he freely manifested his thinking across Confucianism or Taoism. No doubt he suffered from his failed ambition in the real society throughout the life. Nevertheless, he found solace from natural scenery, embodied such pleasure from landscape in literature, and broadened overall horizons over life. In other words, landscape acted as not only his literary source but also his spiritual solace where he eagerly hoped to live forever.
