Abstract
Epistemological and linguistic trends in modern philosophy helped metaethics to flourish in the 20th century. Many metaethical theories took note of the fact that the meaning of a moral assertion could not be exactly identified, and, as the result of this, relativism came to thrive in ethics. Recently, many metaethicians have once again grown interested in moral realism, which is metaethically reshaped nonrelativism.
Moral realists argue that the truth of moral assertions can be judged by moral facts. Moral realism revives moral metaphysics
against those epistemological and linguistic trends, but I believe that it does not elucidate the ontological and epistemological status of a so-called "moral fact." This is, I believe, moral realism has the stance of metaphysical dualism. Therefore, I try to suggest other forms of non-relativism: three versions of moral-metaphysical monism, in this article. This is because only monism can escape from these kinds of epistemological and ontological problems.
However, moral-metaphysical monism may reveal a different kind of problem: How we can justify the validity of moral assertions from one type of fact, which is neither natural nor moral? I depend on three philosophers: M. Heidegger, B. Spinoza, and I. Kant to answer this question. They may be connected respectively with virtue ethics,
consequentialism, and deontology, and this shows that at least three versions of moral-metaphysical monism can be proposed.
