한국 禪院의 생태적 사유와 전통

Abstract

전 지구적으로 나타나고 있는 생태위기는 복합적인 원인에 기반하고 있다. 하지만 가장 근본적인 문제는 무한생산과 무한소비라는 과도한 욕망과 도시화로 대변되는 문명의 확장에 기인한다. 산업사회는 끊임없이 생산하고 소비할 것을 강조하고, 생산성 증대를 미덕으로 삼아왔다. 이런 가치관과 삶의 양식은 끊임없는 생산증대를 요구한다. 그 결과 산업화 이후 세계의 경제규모는 무려 100배나 증가했다. 그러나 자원은 한계가 있으며, 100배로 확장된 경제활동이 쏟아내는 오염물질을 수용하는 것도 한계가 있다. 이제 인간의 과도한 욕망은 절제되어야 하며, 과도한 생산 활동도 자제되어야 한다. 환경위기에 대한 인식이 여기에 이르면 환경문제는 가치관의 문제가 되며, 삶의 양식의 문제로 확장된다. 욕망은 절제되어야 하며, 성장과 풍요를 향해 치닫는 삶을 성찰하고 새로운 삶에 대해 모색할 때가 됐기 때문이다. 자연친화적 삶과 소욕지족이라는 불교적 가치관이 주목받는 이유도 여기에 있다. 이런 맥락에서 보면 선승들의 수행문화가 살아 있는 한국의 선원(禪院)의 삶과 수행자들의 가치관은 생태적 가치관과 삶을 확립하는 데 귀중한 자산이 될 수 있다. 한국의 선원은 소욕지족과 청빈이라는 전통적 가치관이 오롯이 전승되어 왔다. 그리고 그와 같은 가치관은 청빈한 삶과 자연친화적 생활로 나타난다. 그런 점에서 수행자들의 삶은 그 자체로 인류가 지향해야할 생태적 삶의 양식이라고 할 수 있다. 본고는 이와 같은 맥락에서 한국 선승들이 가지고 있는 생태적 사유와 한국 선원이 담지하고 있는 생태적 전통을 고찰했다. The ecological crises happening all around the world are attributed to complex causes, but the most fundamental cause is the expansion of civilization represented by urbanization as well as excessive desire driving infinite production and consumption. Industrialized society has emphasized endless production and consumption and found virtue in increased productivity. Since such values and lifestyles demand ongoing production expansion, the global economy has grown a hundredfold since industrialization. However, global resources are limited. The earth itself has its limits in accepting all the pollutants from the greatly increased economic activities. Now is the time to control excessive human desire and production activities. When perceptions of environmental crises reach this point, environmental issues become a matter of values and lifestyles. It is time to control desire, reflect on a lifestyle that has rushed toward growth and abundance, and search for a new way of life. That is why Buddhist values such as environment-friendly practices and satisfaction with a minimalist lifestyle are attracting attention these days. In this vein, Korean Zen centers, because of the cultivation culture of Zen Buddhists and the values of their ascetics, can be valuable assets to the expansion of ecological values and promotion of environment-friendly lives. Korean Zen centers have fully inherited such traditional values as satisfaction with little and honest poverty, which have been manifested in the life of honesty poverty and environment-friendly practices. Thus, the life of an ascetic is the ecological lifestyle that humankind should pursue. In exploration of this concept, this study examined the ecological grounds of Korean Zen Buddhism and the ecological traditions of Korean Zen centers.
