랄프의 앓는 몸과 유령: 『여인의 초상』 다시 읽기

Abstract

헨리 제임스(Henry James)의 『여인의 초상』(The Portrait of a Lady)을 읽는 비평 적 키워드의 하나로 심미주의(aestheticism)를 꼽을 수 있다. 조나단 프리드만(Jonathan Freedman)은 『취향의 공언: 헨리 제임스, 영국 심미주의, 상품 문화』(Professions of Taste: Henry James, British Aestheticism, and Commodity Culture)에서 영국 심 미주의라는 무대에서 제임스가 펼친 퍼포먼스의 복잡한 성격을 규명하는 일의 중요성 을 주장한 바 있다. 프리드만이 파악하기에 영국 심미주의는 단순하게 문학적 혹은 예 술적인 경향이라는 말로 이해될 수 없으며 도리어 미학의 새로운 정의와 더불어 미학과 사회적인 것의 관계 등이 지속적으로 논의된 각축장으로 보아야 마땅하다. 이러한 문맥 에 뛰어든 제임스의 활약 역시 단지 문학내적인 파장만을 지닌 것으로 협소하게 취급할 수 없다는 게 그의 입장이다. 프리드만은 역사적으로 정밀한 읽기를 통해 19세기 후반 의 영국을 풍미하고 나아가 19세기 후반과 20세기 초반의 미국 사회로 매우 빠르게 유 입된 심미주의와 제임스가 맺은 관계를 밝히고 궁극적으로는 제임스가 심미주의를 리 모델링하는데 상당한 파워를 발휘했음을 주장하고자 한다(xvi-xviii). 그는 제임스가 심미주의와 조우한 결과가 처음 뚜렷하게 윤곽을 드러낸 작품으로 『여인의 초상』을 든 다. 이 작품에서 심미주의는 악의 형태로 재현된다. 제임스가 창조한 사악한 심미주의 자 길버트 오스몬드(Gilbert Osmond)는 향후 50년간 심미주의자의 소설적 재현 양상 을 결정지을 만큼 전염성이 강한(pestiferous) 인물이다(145). 프리드만은 오스몬드 에게 집약된 심미주의의 부정적인 측면이 지니는 비평적인 영향력을 인정하는 한편으로 제임스가 이사벨 아처(Isabel Archer)를 중심으로 심미주의에 관해 제기된 그간의 문 제들을 타개할 하나의 정제된(purified) 모델을 제시한다고 지적한다. 곧 프리드만은 심미주의를 분별하고자 한 제임스에 주목한다. This paper addresses the question, why on earth is Ralph Touchett, an attractive young man deadly sick with a tubercular disease, in order to argue that Henry James remodels aestheticism through Ralph. My presentation suggests a new reading of The Portrait of a Lady by pointing out that James novel establishes reformed aesthetic perspective while detailing Ralphs condition and his way of handling it. I first concentrate on the way tuberculosis is understood and represented in the 19th century cultural context predicating upon Susan Sontags discussion of the romanticizing of TB and then claims that although James brings tuberculosis as a frame to represent Ralphs body he also opens up for Ralph the ways to think beyond the metaphors built up around the disease. Ralph is superior to the temptation of sentimental prejudices or mystical sentiment surrounding the disease. From the very first state of the disease Ralph takes on objective view upon his aching body and while gazing at it endurably he gradually masters the capability of embracing the contradictions and anomalies of his own body. Jonathan Freedman has focused on James point of view on aestheticism discussing the text. According to Freedman, aestheticism is dealt with as an endemic contagion in the novel that even infects James himself. However, my point is that Freedman misses the way Ralphs struggle with the disease is contextualized in the novel and consequently ends up in somewhat flat interpretation. He simply concludes that Ralphs aching body is a visible sign of Osmondian aestheticisms invasive power. My presentation contends that Ralphs spectatorship should be distinguished from Osmondian aestheticism since Ralph can be defined as a democratic aestheticist in George Katebs language. The democratic aestheticist maintains as much susceptibility and acceptability towards life as possible while controlling aesthetic cravings to keep life confined in a beautiful frame. In my reading, Ralphs aching body embodies the resistance to the triteness of romantically-charged tuberculosis and the virtue of a democratic aestheticist. Finally, I connect the mature attitude of Ralph with the ethics of writing clarified by James.
