(Christina Rossetti)
(Dante Gabriel Rossetti)
(Florence
(Carpenter 421). Christina Rossettis Goblin Market is a re-articulation of female experience
against discursive regulation. The poem having been written in Victorian Age,
previous interpretations tended to reduce the poem into a mere moral fable,
and sexual connotations in it into religious metaphor. The poem itself, however,
resists this moral and religious frame. Though Laura and Lizzie—the sisters
in the poem—violate norms that they should not contact with goblin men,
they are not condemned for their desire, experience, and heroics. Instead, the
poem presents an alternative perspective on their transgression, and allows
them an original voice.
The world in the poem is already tinted with repressive discourse that
they should not contact with goblin men while the maidens everyday life is
overlapped with goblin men. A precedent Jeanie exemplifies the restriction
through her own death. Nevertheless, Laura pursues her desire to consume
the delectable fruits and Lizzie, in her intention to help Laura, also see and
traffic with the goblin men. However, the poem does not impose any blame on
them. Even after Laura eating the forbidden fruits, Lizzie and Laura sleep in
the same bed, hugging each other. The concrete, beautiful, and innocent scene,
namely the poetic structure, prevents judging Laura conventionally.
When Laura fell sick as the consequence of indulging in goblin fruits that
symbolize sexual pleasure, not knowing virginity is the only worthy female
sexuality in Victorian social convention and goblin fruits never go under the
circulation of life, Lizzie converts the meaning of barren goblin fruits by her
heroic sacrifice and re-kindles the flame of life in Laura. Where Lizzie revolutionizes
the meaning of goblin fruits, Christina Rossetti translates Lizzies violent experience with goblin men into an un-traumatic rescue work.
With newly acquired sense of self through experience, Laura and Lizzie
become speaking subjects and articulate their history in their own perspective
to next generation. For them, the most precious instruction to learn and teach
in life, thus, is there is no friend like a sister.
