dc.description.abstract | On the surface, Edith Whartons The House of Mirth may seem a conventionally oppressive story of a young beautiful woman spiraling down into (social) death due to her inability to marry. However, a close inspection of Whartons narrative technique reveals that The House of Mirth is a story which narrates Lily Bart through such an objectifying gaze and yet appropriates that gaze only in order to expose its violence. Informed by the feminist narratological
problematization of masculine narrative technique, this paper analyzes the novels narrative voice in order to separate the dominating Lawrence Seldens authorial voice and Whartons authorial voice, which are by no means the same thing. | - |
