로티의 우연적 진리관과 철학관 비판

Abstract

로티의 우연성 개념에 대한 지금까지의 비판은 로티가 상대주의 를 범하고 있다는 견해 및 그가 철학의 종언을 주장하고 있다는 견해로 종합할 수 있다. 그러나 기존의 비판은 대체로 로티의 의도를 잘못 이해하 여 빗나간 지점을 공격하고 있다. 나는 로티에 대한 비판을 강화하기 위하 여 세 가지를 지적한다. 첫째, 로티는 단순한 형태의 상대주의를 범하고 있지는 않다. 그러나 우연성 개념을 느슨하게 사용하고 있는 까닭에 내적 으로 상대주의를 벗어나지 못한다. 둘째, 로티는 진리 개념을 모호하게 사 용하고 있어 이러한 내적 모순에 더욱 깊이 빠져든다. 셋째, 로티가 사용 하는 철학 개념은 일반적이지 않기 때문에 통상적인 어법 아래에서는 그가 철학의 종언으로 향하고 있음을 인정해야 한다. 이를 통해 나는, 로티의 우연성 개념이 결과적으로 상대주의와 철학 종언주의로 나아가는 것은 맞 지만, 이 결과가 로티를 분석적으로 고찰한 데서 나오는 것이 아니라 그 이론이 자체적으로 안고 있는 문제에서 비롯되는 것임을 밝힌다. Many philosophers have criticized that Richard Rorty commits relativist fallacy or insists on the end of philosophy through the concept of contingency. Such philosophers, however, wander from the main points, for they misunderstand Rortys intention. I point out three facts to strengthen the criticism: (1) Rorty internally commits relativist fallacy, while he does not commit a simple form of relativism; (2) Rortys concept of contingency is so vague that Rorty is sinking deeper into an internal contradiction; and (3) Rortys concept of philosophy is not general, so anyone who utters it in general usage can say that Rorty heads toward the end of philosophy. I suggest, as a result of these facts, that Rorty proceeds to relativist fallacy and the end of philosophy, not by an analytic treatment of his theory, but by the problems which the theory itself has.
